Margalla Avenue Islamabad: Route, Extension Status & the Name Trap

The 33-km highway at the foot of the Margalla Hills — Sangjani to Bhara Kahu — what is open, what the M-1 extension changes for D-12, E-11 and the F/G/H sectors, and why 'Margalla Avenue', 'Margalla Enclave' and 'Margalla Orchard' are three different things.

Margalla Avenue is a road, not a housing scheme — and that sentence alone settles half the searches that land here. It is the ~33-km highway CDA runs along the foot of the Margalla Hills on Islamabad’s northern edge, designed to link Sangjani on GT Road (N-5) in the west with Bhara Kahu / the Murree Expressway (E-75) in the east. If you were looking for the DHA scheme, that is Margalla Enclave — a different thing, on the opposite side of the city. The full name-trap is untangled at the bottom.

What is actually open (dated)

  • Main avenue: inaugurated 20 June 2023. The corridor runs behind the D and E sector belt — it is the reason D-12 and E-11’s access story changed.
  • Iran Avenue section: the 5.5-km stretch from D-12 to E-11, opened 22 April 2024 (jointly inaugurated by the Iranian president and the PM — hence the name). This is the piece our D-12 guide and E-11 guide price against, and the frontage of D-12’s approved cricket-stadium site.
  • History for perspective: planned in 2006, first works in 2012 with a June-2013 “deadline” — the corridor took over a decade longer than promised. Worth remembering whenever a completion date below is quoted as certain.

The 2026 story: the extension to the M-1 motorway

  • What is being built: the missing western link so northern Islamabad reaches the M-1 without detouring onto Srinagar Highway or IJP Road. Per CDA and Dawn (6 May 2026): a three-lane carriageway each way, two-lane service roads, two underpasses, a bridge, and an interchange at Sangjani on GT Road.
  • Who builds what: CDA executes the ~2.7-km section from GT Road to the Sangjani grid station; the Punjab government executes the ~2.5-km second phase from the interchange to the M-1 itself. Estimated cost was Rs 3.58 billion, with the lowest bid reported about a tenth below it.
  • The dates, honestly: the Sangjani interchange was fast-tracked for 31 July 2026; the full CDA section carries a December 2026 target. As of late August 2026 we have not found an official ribbon-cutting announcement for the interchange — treat “open” claims as unverified until CDA says so. We update this line when it changes.
  • Who gains: Dawn names D-12, E-11 and the F/G/H sectors as the direct beneficiaries — a straight run to the motorway instead of the Srinagar Highway crawl. In plot terms, it is one more dated entry on the access ledger of D-12 and E-11.

Margalla Avenue vs Margalla Road — same thing?

Yes. Official documents and news reports use both names for the same corridor (Dawn’s 2026 coverage says “Margalla Road extension”; CDA material and Wikipedia say “Margalla Avenue”). The D-12–E-11 stretch additionally carries the name Iran Avenue. Three names, one road — do not let a dealer present them as separate projects.

The “Margalla” name trap — four different things

  • Margalla Avenue / Margalla Road — this page. A highway on the city’s northern edge, at the foot of the hills.
  • DHA Margalla Enclave — a DHA plot scheme in CDA Zone IV on the south-east side (Jinnah Avenue corridor). Not at the hills; the name is branding. Its 3rd ballot closes 4 September 2026.
  • Margalla Orchard — a separate FGEHA-SCBA scheme on Main Park Road (DHA joined September 2025). Also south-east, also not at the hills.
  • Margalla Hills — the national park itself. Nothing inside it is legally for sale; anyone selling “Margalla Hills plots” is selling a story.

Why a plots site covers a road: access is the half of a plot’s price that changes while you hold it. We track this corridor for D-12/E-11 buyers the same way we track the Park Road underpass for Bahria Enclave — dated, sourced, and updated when the ribbon actually cuts.

FAQs

Quick answers

Along the foot of the Margalla Hills on Islamabad's northern edge — designed to run ~33 km from Sangjani on GT Road (N-5) in the west to Bhara Kahu / the Murree Expressway (E-75) in the east, passing behind the D and E sector belt. The main avenue was inaugurated 20 June 2023; the 5.5-km D-12 to E-11 stretch (named Iran Avenue) opened 22 April 2024.

The main corridor has been operational since June 2023, and the D-12–E-11 Iran Avenue section since April 2024. The piece still in progress is the western extension to the M-1 motorway: the Sangjani interchange was fast-tracked for 31 July 2026 and the full CDA section targets December 2026 — as of late August 2026 we have found no official opening announcement for the interchange, so treat that stretch as under construction.

The link from the avenue's western end to the M-1 motorway via an interchange at Sangjani on GT Road: CDA builds ~2.7 km to the Sangjani grid station, Punjab builds ~2.5 km onward to the M-1. Spec per Dawn (May 2026): three-lane carriageways both ways, service roads, two underpasses and a bridge, at an estimated Rs 3.58 billion. Beneficiaries named: D-12, E-11 and the F/G/H sectors, which get direct motorway access.

Nahi — Margalla Avenue shumaali kinare ki sarak hai (pahariyon ke damain mein), aur DHA Margalla Enclave janoob-mashriqi taraf Zone IV ka plot scheme hai jiska naam sirf branding hai. Teesri cheez Margalla Orchard hai (Park Road ki alag scheme), aur chauthi khud Margalla Hills — jahan kuch bhi qanooni tor par nahi bikta. Dealer in charon ko mila kar baat kare to samajh jayen ke homework nahi hua.
